In the middle of celebrating its fifth anniversary, Gallery One in Belle Meade is showing art by two women who create pieces with the illusion of a screen or curtain in the foreground, hence the title, Veiled.

Suzy Scarborough, a former corporate lawyer, cuts pages from old books she finds on her travels and bonds them onto wood panels with layers of epoxy, then uses ink, acrylic, watercolor and other tools to create works that often have the look from far away of a silkscreen print.

Susan Hall, who lives and works in Point Reyes Station, Calif., uses many layers of oil paint to create textured colorscapes that look as though they're behind a curtain of lace.

"Although their works are very, very different, there is an underlying connection," said Shelley Liles McBurney, owner of Gallery One. "Both artists really do layer their work with imagery and texture. On the surface the work appears to be one thing, and then upon closer examination, mutates somewhat into something more."

The show runs through Saturday. Gallery One is at 5133 Harding Road and is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and by appointment. There is no admission fee. More details: www.galleryone.biz, 352-3006.
