Butterfly by Jennifer Bain
For artists living in different cities and working in different media,
Lorraine Glessner and Jennifer Bain share a remarkably similar aesthetic sense,
which makes this two-person show particularly intriguing. Philadelphian Glessner
combines fabrics, threads, paper, paint and found items in layered encaustic
collages that at times resemble quilts, finely detailed quartz and even magnified microbes.
They're mysterious yet pleasing images, and all share an earthy, organic quality,
which makes sense given the artist's avowed fascination with "the regeneration of life through decomposition."
Bain's acrylic paintings are inspired by outdoor settings around her Northern California home,
so it's not surprising that her paintings are similarly organic: The hazy flowers,

leaves and ferns of "Butterfly" are like a more sophisticated, impressionistic
take
on the wax-paper leaf pressings you made in elementary school.
