R ebecca Ruegger's mixed media paintings, which often feature oddly disproportionate figures in ordinary moments alone or in nature, convey a curious and unusual depth of emotion.
"Sometimes during all of our journeys, there are moments when the way becomes mysterious and indefinite," says Ruegger. "My effort is simply to suggest, to the best of my ability, some of these shadowy pauses in an allegorical manner with hopes that the viewer will be able to relate part of their own traverse to the imagery."
For the final touches of Ruegger's figurative watercolors, she applies opaque gouache and bits of collage of found objects such as lace, paper string, or feathers, giving the work added interest and dimension. Using a blade, she then grinds small amounts of powder from pastel sticks and applies the colors to the surface with a soft watercolor brush, producing the enigmatic effect thar characrerizes many of her compositions.
"As an artist, Rebecca speaks with a distinct voice and vision," says Shelley Liles McBurney, owner of Gallery One in Nashville. "Her narrative paintings can simultaneously evoke the lighthearted, or whimsy, as well as the darker, more complex, factors of the human spirit. Collectors appreciate the subde dualities in the work and respond to Rebeccas paintings in a very personal way."
